Elusive Realism
Duo exhibition with Emily van Dijk @ CBK Zeeland

From photography towards conceptual architecture, looking to restructure existing buildings. It starts with the search for a building or location, but after that there are two moments that make my photography feel right. The first moment occurs when I look through the lens. My photos are often made of large sized buildings where I tend to zoom in until I got all the elements I want. The second moment takes place when I see it developed. It has to have a certain quality I’m looking for in my work. The surprise found in the lens can therefore either be confirmed or denied when I look at the developed film.

The process of alienation starts immediately when I’m peeking through the lens and I frame a specific part of a building. At this moment a new reality opens itself right in front of me. Afterwards this reality can confirm or deny itself when I’ve developed my film. That’s the essence of analog photography.

I started drawing in response to my photos. I take the geometric shapes from these photos and keep piling them up until I’ve made a building of my interest. I’m also translating these drawings into scale models. I hope to make around 15 to 20, so I can make my own little, fantasy city. After this I will choose one scale model to enlarge into my first ever, human sized, building. Because I won’t consider the technical aspects such as the foundation
and usability it will actually be a sculpture. It’s purely about the aesthetics of my own created reality. These works will
be accompanied by new and previous photos.
